Mars is an extremely dangerous place to live. With Earth as far as 93 million miles away, if a disaster occurs, Koinaeans are on their own. This is why the Habitat Sphere contains Koinae's Auxiliary Systems. In the event of a major catastrophe, every citizen of Koinae can be evacuated to the Habitat Sphere until the problem is fixed or help arrives from Earth.
The Auxiliary Systems include a water procurement system, communications capabilities, an energy generator, a waste disposal system, an air ventilation and filtration unit, and one Martian year's supply of freeze-dried food. The water procurement system, communications and the energy generator are all the same as main systems, but on a smaller scale.
In an emergency, Koinaeans can seal themselves in the Habitat Sphere if the rest of the colony lost its oxygen atmosphere. The air ventilation and filtration unit would remove toxic gases from the air and maintain the oxygen level.
The way the auxiliary waste disposal system deals with waste is different from the advanced system the Waste Management Center utilizes. The auxiliary system vaporizes all the wastes that are supplied to it and pumps it out into the Martian atmosphere.
The Auxiliary Systems are only capable of supporting the Habitat Sphere. However, other spheres can be operational while one or more main system is down. For example, if the Water Procurement Center fails, water will only be available in the Habitat Sphere. But the other spheres will still be functional, simply without water.
