Support Mars Now

I would like to be able to tell you today that by 2050 a colony of this size would be on Mars, I would like to tell you that space travel would be as common as flying, I would like to tell you that we will build a network of space stations, but I can't because the very people who put the ideas in our heads that we could go to Mars and complete all of these wonderful things are trying to take away the very funding that supports these ideas.

But there is something we can do. As the next generation, we must protect our space program by speaking up about this issue. Below you will see a sample of a letter we have created on this topic. You may sign your name in support or create one of your own to send.

If you agree with us at Mission Mars that we must support our space program, type your name and e-mail address below. We will not misuse your name or e-mail by selling it to anyone. (The e-mail address is optional.)

Vice President Al Gore

Space Program Support

Dear Mr. Gore,

We, the next generation of space explorers, wish to express our support for the space programs of the world.

We are worried that space exploration is being put on the back burner. In a recent letter to The Planetary Society members, Executive Director Louis D. Friedman stated: "The official U.S. National Space Policy calls for "sustained robotic presence on Mars...and sample returns from the celestial bodies of the solar system," yet NASA's budget has been cut about 14 percent over the past five years.

Some of the most important technical discoveries have come from the American space program. Wasting the knowledge that we have learned would be an insult to all of the people who work towards peaceful space exploration.

Beside the technical advances, space exploration has served as an inspiration. Artists, musicians, and writers have created some of the world's best works based on ideas taken from space. There is now the threat that the next generation may not have the chance to be similarly inspired.

We must keep space exploration alive by giving better funding to programs like NASA. There is still a chance for us to learn more and to motivate the next generation of space explorers.

Sincerely,
