Back/Next

After you are connected to an IRC server, you need to know a few commands to move around. Here they are:

The /JOIN command allows you to join a channel of your choice, or if the channel doesn't exist, the channel is created.

Syntax: /JOIN [#channel name] [the key]
The channel name is whatever the channel is called, plus a # sign added before it.
The key is a password that is required for some channels. You usually don't even enter anything there.

Example
/JOIN #example bitschips

If you're in a channel, and you wish to speak to someone privately, you use the /MSG command.

Syntax: /MSG [alias] [your message]
The alias is the person's nickname for whom you wish to chat with privately.
Your Message is where you type whatever you wish to say to the other person.

Example
/MSG Bud Hi Bud, how's it going?

If you want to find out something about another person, such as their IP address, server, or Name you use the /WHOIS command. Note, that to get names, e-mail addresses, etc., to be displayed by the /WHOIS command, the user must have this data available to you.

Syntax:/WHOIS [alias]
The alias is the person to whom you wish to lookup information.

Example
/WHOIS Bud

These are the few basic commands that you need to navigate around in MIRC. Have fun!
