Volta, Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio1745-1827. Italian physicist. Professor, Pavia (1779-1804); invented the electrophorus (1775) and the voltaic pile (1800); did research on the composition of marsh gas and isolated methane (1778); studied atmospheric electricity. Made count and senator of kingdom of Lombardy by Napoleon (1801); director of philosophical faculty at Padua (from 1815). The volt, an electrical unit, is named in his honor.
