Back: Robert Goddard
Oberth was the third pioneer of rocketry. Oberth was a theorition, like Tsiolkovsky, and not an engineer or experimenter. He only built 2 rockets, neither of which flew. Unlike Goddard, he wanted publicity. He publicized rockets and space travel, and worked out many details of space flight independently. He knew that in order to travel in space, people would have to take it seriously, and therefore he spent much of his time teaching. Oberth also founded Germany's society for space travel, and wrote 2 excellent books on rocketry. He also designed several rockets, and he got the German government's support during W.W.I and after. Oberth's main contribution was to theoretical space flight and he inspired many others to study this subject.
