DON'Ts

Here is a list of things that you should not do when
it comes to carbon monoxide and its dangers:

NEVER let your car, truck, or Recreational Vehicle idle in the garage!
Running these vehicles in your garage can quickly turn the room deadly. So don't run, or don't let your parents run any vehicle in your garage, NOT EVEN FOR A MOMENT!

NEVER operate any gasoline-powered vehicle or equipment in an enclosed area!
This includes motorcycles, snowmobiles, lawn or snow blowers, marine engines, or any other gasoline or kerosene-powered equipment that you may own. Don't run anything that runs on gasoline or kerosene in an enclosed area, NOT EVEN TO WARM THEM UP!

NEVER use an unvented barbecue indoors.
Never, ever operate or cook with an unvented gas or charcoal barbecue indoors, in a garage, or in any other enclosed area.

NEVER ignore or bypass safety devices.
Never ignore or attempt to bypass a safety device of your fired appliance or furnace. Operation of automatic safety devices means that something is wrong. Read your appliance instructions and find out what to do.. OR CALL A PROFESSIONAL IMMEDIATELY!

NEVER heat your home with gas oven or stove.
Despite how cold it may get, never, ever use a natural gas oven or stove to provide heat for the home. Carbon monoxide is a by-product of these appliances, and it can accumulate rapidly within the house.

NEVER use an unvented space heater.
Always be sure to vent space heaters that use flammable fuel such as kerosene.. never leave them unvented!

NEVER ignore the smell of fuel.
Though CO itself has no odor, the smell of fuel indicates a problem with the appliance or a leak in the fuel system. If you suspect a problem, seek help as soon as possible!

NEVER ignore a CO alarm!
Never ignore the warning sound of a carbon monoxide detector... get everyone out as fast as possible! Call for help or 911 from somewhere else.
