Description

The Treasury section is an invaluable tool in studying different time periods and different cultures. While students may not learn dates and facts from reading these personal accounts, they will better understand the impact of political and social changes on the individual. In addition, the CyberTour outlines a vast number of issues created by the aging world population. Finally, SimAging allows students to try their hand at running a city and balancing quality of life, the economy and technology.

Sample Activities and Topics for Discussion
  • What is the importance of preserving "witnesses to history" (personal accounts of great historical events)?
  • In what ways can the aging population be viewed as a new opportunity instead of a national burden?
  • Compare and contrast the treatment of the elderly in different cultures.
  • How do political and social changes impact on the individual?
  • Compare an individual’s account of a historical event to a textbook’s description of the same event. What biases are present in each? Which one is more accurate as a historical document?
  • Have students find an elderly friend, relative, or visit a retirement center or nursing home and conduct an interview. Students can then upload a transcript of the interview to the World Wisdom section and, optionally, describe what they have learned from the interview.
