The Arch of Titus

Arch of Titus Inside the Arch The arch which you can see on the left is called the Arch of Titus. It was built to commemorate the capture of Jerusalem. The ceiling of the arch is carved with with famous reliefsof the victory in Jeruselum. Almost all of these releifs are still visible today. The arch of Titus is also the oldest archway in Rome with a single passage. As with nmany monuments in Rome there was ritual. After a war or battle had ended all the soldiers marched through the archway and then through the forum to cleanse themselves of the blood of the enemy. It took a long time for the Romans to design and complete the arch. Because of the time taken to create this monument it was extremely well proportioned to minimize its weight. One of the many attributes to the Arch of Titus is that it is a massive building with so many beautiful details. The Arch of Titus is located t the eastern most side of the forum and was used as an entrance and exit to the forum. Below is a picture taken along the Via Sacra looking into the forum. At the far end you can see the arch of Titus.
