This page is to give you a little background on what went in to the creation and brainstorming of the Virtual Museum. Think of it as our way of whining a little...:).
The creation of our project was separated into three parts. The first was the Brainstorming, which took place over e-mail between the group members and in person between Mark and Peter (since they lived close).
The second part was the creation and the testing which also took place between Mark and Peter and was done in Bakersfield. And Finally the Third part (and the hardest) was the actual library digging and research which was done by Sharon and Mark over the course of the project.
The Beginning
"Hey what if we could figure out a way to have people view the site through the point of view of a dolphin, kind of like their swimming with them"

Getting the picture yet? Coordinating over a distance wasn't the easiest task to handle with Sharon in Sacramento and me and Pete in Bakersfield but we worked it out in the end...

The Creation and Testing of the project took place in Marks room for the most part. It was one of the most difficult parts not only because it was complicated (although that aided in it) but because nothing like this has been done before (in our knowledge) and our team basically had no reference to go by.
building the VRML was one of the most challenging things I (Mark) have ever done. When we first began the whole thing seemed simple. Buy a few programs build a few rooms and stick it up on the net. It wasn't until we had already begun though that we realized it wasn't going to be that easy. The Programs we had chosen to use in the construction turned out not to be compatible with each other until they were converted to VRML which meant that if we wanted to work between them (which we had to) we had to find another way to do it. The answer to this problem was to use the actual programming language in conjunction to the 3-d programming tools to intermingle segments of the programs together. This of course led to an interesting challenge.
The first step would be to build the basic shell of the program in one of the 3-d modelers. We would then take this program and convert it to VRML. Once this was done we would use a third program to pull this up and add images, texture files, and lights to the world and save it to a different file. Finally once this was done we would take the original file (converted to VRML) and the new file (also now in VRML) and, using a word processor, we would take the segments of the second file we wanted (such as lights, picts, and textures) and place them in the first file which we could then view for mistakes using a net Browser.
