Résumé Template

Looking for a summer job? Well, a résumé won't help you. You have to get the job yourself, but a good résumé can get you an interview.   Follow these guidelines to write a professional résumé that an employer will love.

Tips:

  • Your résumé should be short -- two pages at the most.
  • Try to format it nicely, but don't use any fancy fonts or colours.
  • Make lots of photocopies, but don't just hand out your résumé everywhere -- try to find jobs that are available that you'd like and submit your résumé to these locations.
  • You should always include a cover letter: it's basically an original copy of a letter to the prospective employer telling them what kind of job you're interested in and briefly (as in two sentences) describing your résumé. Staple it to the front, and sign it.
  • Proofread over and over -- a spelling mistake on a résumé looks really bad.

Name

Address
Street Address
City, Province, Postal Code
Telephone Number
e-mail address (if you have one)

Career objective: a brief statement of how you want to use your skills and the job you wish to obtain. This can be left out, but it's not recommended. Try using sentences such as: "An entry-level position as a __________."  Or  "An opportunity to apply my __________ and __________ skills in a summer position with _______________." (These come from actual résumés).

Education: Starting with the most recent and going to the least recent, list the schools you attended or courses you took that would have anything to do with this field. Include the dates attended and the level reached. Also include your G.P.A. (Grade Point Average), unless it's under 3.0.

Experience: Starting from most recent to least recent, list the jobs you've had, your employers, their locations, and the dates you worked there. Describe your responsibilities and tasks while employed there. Use action verbs and enhance these descriptions. Use past-tense verbs for jobs you used to have and present tense for jobs you have now. Do not abbreviate or use personal pronouns (like I).

Honours/activities: Include prizes you've won for school, times when you've showed initiative, any volunteering experience, hobbies or extracurricular activities related to the type of job you're looking for, etc. Be brief — your résumé should only be about a page.
