Writing Concerns: Planning

Purpose
Ask yourself "What is the object
of this project?" Are you trying to:
-
entertain your audience or make them
laugh
-
inform your audience of something
-
teach
-
persuade
Once you decide why and how to write
your paper, you'll have a focus and a better idea of where you're going.
|
Audience
Who will read this?
-
a teacher
-
a prospective employer
-
a friend
-
someone else: ___________________
The audience will affect the style of
your writing. If you're writing to a friend, your choice of words will
be more informal. If you're going to pass this project in to your
teacher, you'll have to worry more about your grammar.
Subject
What is the subject of your paper?
Try to narrow it down. Research your topic carefully so that your
opinions will be valid and you'll sound well-informed.
Point of View
Will you use:
-
first person (I)
-
second person (you)
-
third person (he/she)
Again, it depends on your audience and
purpose. For a formal assignment, try to use third person.
What ever you do choose, stick to it. Don't switch from tense to
tense.
Format
What will be the layout of your assignment?
