Choosing the right food

Think Before You Eat!

We need to make sure we eat a balanced diet so that the body gets all the nutrients it requires.

By making just a few small changes to what we eat, we can help our body grow, and protect it against future illness.

Remember we are what we eat – so think before you eat!

Food and Fuel

Our bodies are a bit like a car. We need to keep topping up our fuel levels, otherwise we run out of energy.

The body gets its fuel (energy) from nutrients that can be found in food and drinks.

Nutrients help to provide the body with the fuel it needs to work properly and to stay healthy.

The body also needs water. Water is not a nutrient but it’s important that we keep our water levels topped up, just like a car.

Why You Should Eat a Healthy Lunch

  • -

Having a good lunch is important because it gives you the energy to stay alert in class. (Just be sure to stay away from heavy meals so you don't end up nodding off at your desk.)

  • -

A satisfied stomach also won't growl every minute, allowing you and your neighbors to concentrate.

  • -

A better choice would be buying a ham or turkey sandwich and bringing along a refillable bottle of water from home.

  • -

Choosing to eat healthy can be cheaper than buying quick snacks.

  • -

You could also save more money by making your lunch at home. A lunch at home is very healthy.

Making A Healthy Breakfast

A healthy breakfast should contain some protein and some fiber. Protein can come from low fat meats, eggs, beans or dairy. Fiber can be found in whole grains, vegetables and fruits. A good example of a healthy breakfast might be something simple like a hard boiled egg, an orange, and a bowl of whole grain cereal with low fat milk.
Stay away from the sugary cereals, syrups, pastries, and white breads because they are digested quickly and will leave you hungry and tired in a couple of hours. Protein and fiber satisfy your hunger and will keep you feeling full until lunch time.

Drink Tea

There is some evidence that tea may help in improving memory, and preventing cavities, cancer, and heart disease. Fleming says, though, that the overall research is still inconclusive.
There may well be some beneficial effects of tea, particularly the potential antioxidant effect.

However, there's no doubt that a cool iced tea can be a refreshing treat during hot days. Try flavoring your tea with juices, fruits, cinnamon sticks, ginger, and other condiments.
