Once upon a time...

Ella of Frell was born, and as all newborns, a fairy godmother bestowed her a gift. Unfortunately, her fairy godmother, Lucinda, was notorious for her awful gifts, and Ella was no exception; she was given the gift of obedience. She had a hard time as a child due to her gift, but she is still rebellious and fights for what she wants. Her mother died as she was severely ill, and later on her father, Sir Peter, marries Dame Olga. Ella's new stepsisters, Hattie and Olive, push her around a lot and are the stereotypical evil stepsisters. Her father then goes away on a trip and she is stuck with her new stepsisters and stepmother. Even though Ella tries to hide her gift, Hattie soon discovers it during a debate at school.

Meet the Prince

Prince Charmont (Char) will be king in a few weeks, so he and his uncle, Sir Edgar, go to a mall opening ceremony to socialize with is subjects. Ella and her good friend Areida, who are both anti-royals, were there to demonstrate against Char. Hattie and Olive, however, are fans of Char and tell Ella to go home. Char, who has many fangirls, is chased by those fans and eventually bumps into Ella. Hattie and Olive then finds them and forces Ella to go back as she flirts with Char. Back at the mall, Hattie and Olive abuse Ella's gift by forcing her to steal. She was seen by a security guard, and a chase scene ensues where in the end she gets arrested. Dame Olga is furious and Hattie tells her that Areida forces Ella to steal, which makes Dame Olga tell Ella that she can never see Areida again. Shaken, Ella embarks on her journey to find Lucinda and to be rid of the gift. Before she goes, Mandy, her cook who is also a fairy, lends her Benny the book (her boyfriend she accidentally turns into a book) who can help her with his knowledge.

The journey begins

Benny the book shows her that Lucinda will be going to a wedding in Giantville, so that would be her destination. On her first day of the journey, she finds an elf, Slannen of Pim, being bullied on a Catherine wheel. She saves him and he invites her to eat dinner with him in his hometown. There, she finds that all elves are forced by law to be entertainers while Slannen himself would rather be a lawyer. Ella invites him to go with her, so Slannen can talk to the prince about changing the law. Meanwhile, an invitation to Char's coronation ball arrives at Ella's house for her, instead her stepfamily uses the invitation. The next day, Slannen and Ella are captured by ogres, but they were saved by Char who was passing by. Feeling sorry for Ella, he joins her party to Giantville. During their journey, Ella talks about what Char should do when he is king, and her ideas are very radical compared to current policies. All this is overheard by Heston, the snake of the evil Sir Edgar. When they arrive, it turns out they just missed Lucinda, so Char invites her to go to his castle's Hall of Records in Lamia to pursue her again. Char talks to the giants (who are forced to work all day) about what they want and he discovers more about what the other species are forced to do by law.

The plot thickens

Ella's party arrives in Lamia, and so does Sir Peter, Dame Olga and her daughters. Ella and Char meets Sir Edgar, where he becomes intrigued with her behavior. After a lot of searching in the Hall of Records, she finds where Lucinda is, but when she tries to look for her in person, Lucinda had already moved elsewhere. Meanwhile, Char confides in his uncle that he wants to propose to Ella like how his father proposed to his mother, in the Hall of Mirrors at the stroke of midnight during the coronation ball. Sir Edgar meets with Hattie and Olive and bribes them with Char's hand in marriage for information on Ella, so Hattie tells him about Ella's gift. Sir Edgar abuses the gift by telling Ella to kill Char when he proposes and even reveals to her that it was he who killed Char's father. She couldn't refuse to do so and since she can't find Lucinda, she asks Slannen to tie her to a tree, far from Lamia, and also tells him to find the others to help keep Sir Edgar away from Char. When the ball commenced, Lucinda suddenly appeared in front of Ella. When Ella asked her to take back her gift, Lucinda refused and instead let her go from the tree, gave her a dress and forced her to go to the ball, thinking that she was doing good. Char, who was heartbroken that Ella left, was pleasantly surprised that Ella arrived and immediately whisked her away to the Hall of Mirrors. She is sobbing when he proposes and was about to stab him, when she has a series of flashbacks of all the times she had to do things that she didn't want to, and in the end she finally fights off her gift. However, Char and Edgar sees the knife and Ella is immediately taken to the prison, where she will be executed.

The big finish

Outside the city, all the giants, ogres and elves find Benny the book, who shows them where Ella is. They all then enter the city by pretending to be executors and eventually frees Ella. They all check Benny to see what Edgar's up to, and they find out that he has poisoned the crown that Char would wear. Ella concocts a plan to crash the coronation ceremony, with the ogres as guards and all the other creatures just stopping the ceremony. A fight ensues when they stop the ceremony, and Ella tells Char everything as they fight. Benny also meets Mandy during the fight, and she finally transforms him back into a human. As the fight dies down, Char confronts Edgar, and during his evil villain speech, Sir Edgar accidentally puts on the crown. As he lay unconscious, Ella agrees to marry Char. In the final scene, it is Char and Ella's wedding day and we also see that Sir Edgar didn't die from the poison.
