WHAT IS PETROLEUM?
Petroleum is a naturally occurring oily and flammable liquid .It can be found deep inside the surface of earth in the form of natural deposits. It is made of mixture of hydrocarbons and compounds of nitrogen and sulfur.
Its common name is crude oil.
HOW IS IT FORMED?
Since Millions and millions of years the plant and animal decayed remains which were buried deep inside the layers of rocks were decomposed by the action of various microscopic organisms and petroleum was formed.
PROPERTIES:
Petroleum is a liquid.
It is made of hydrocarbons which are as follows:
Natural gas
Gasoline
Benzene
Naphtha
Kerosene
Diesel fuel
Oils
Tar

These instruments help us to find out where exactly petroleum can be found on earth and so scientists make use of these instruments and dig wells to take out petroleum.
WHAT IS REFINING?
Refining is a process of separating the various hydrocarbons present in petroleum from each other. Various refining processes are used to separate them
Fractional distillation:
Petroleum is heated and than sent to a tower where the components are collected at different heights .Once they are collected they are taken out and processed. The processed by products are used for various purposes.

WHAT ARE THE BYPRODUCTS OF PETROLEUM?

1.LPG Gas:
It is a mixture of hydrocarbons used as fuel in vehicles, heating appliances like gas stoves etc. It is an excellent alternative to replace chlorofluorocarbons. It is also used as refrigerant, as motor fuel and as cooking fuel

2.White petrol
White petrol is used as fuel in combustion engines

3.Wax
Wax-used to make candles, wax paper, shoe polishes, automobile polish, wood polish, ,mold release agents in mold making etc.

4.Grease
Grease is used as lubricants.

6.Diesel
Diesel is used as fuel for running vehicles.
