WORLD RESOURCES-AN OVERVIEW

All the resources in the world that support life and help us to lead a healthy and comfortable life and sustain the continuity of life on earth are precious. Our air, water, soil, forests, minerals, wild life, energy resources like petroleum, solar energy, tidal energy etc can be classified as world resources or natural resources.

Isn’t it true that our life is very very comfortable with all these resources at hand .Can we think of life without a bus or a train or even an aero plane. Don’t you think our life is enjoyable because of the modern gadgets which run on electricity? If this kind of life is to be handed over to the next generation on this planet it is the duty of each one of us to understand the importance and preciousness of all the resources we have.

RESOURCES CLASSIFIED:

All our World Resources can be classified into two groups

Renewable Resources

Non renewable resources.

Resources which can be renewed again and again are called Renewable resources. They can be replaced or reproduced any number of times. Examples of such resources are

Living resources-Plants and animals

Non living resources like

Water

Wind/air

Solar Energy

Tidal energy

Soil etc.

On the other hand we have some resources which cannot be renewed or got back after they are used. They are called as Nonrenewable Resources.

We can say that the following are such resources:
Fossil fuels like oil, Coal, petroleum and natural gas
Ores of metals we get from the ground etc.
This is because these resources take millions and millions of years to get formed and once exhausted we have to wait for millions of years again to get them back. As this is not practically possible, it is clear that they cannot be got back. Mainly because we have learnt to use them faster than they can be formed. So it is our duty to make use of them with care so that we do not completely loose them.

CONSERVATION-THE MANTRA OF THE DAY

  • Is it necessary to conserve these resources??

Yes, because the population of our world has increased many many times than it should have bneen and so we are using up the resources at a very fast rateand also overusing them than needed because of our ignorance. So we must relies our mistake and do our best to consderve these world resources for future. Now we are facing the risk of even loosing some of our useful wild animals. This is because of man’s greed to hunt them for his benefit. All these activities led to extinction of some species from this world One such example is the dinosaur. We must wake up before it is too late and do the needful.

Human Development and World Resources

Human development and world resources-Are they linked to each other?
Human development is directly linked to use and exploitation of world resources. Man has always tried to exploit nature’s bounty for his development and so resources played a great role in human civilization. Economic development demands a great investment of natural resources. The following natural resources in the world are very important for growth of any economy.
Fossil fuels
Metals,
Minerals
Biomass from agriculture
Forests
Fishery
