The Many Roles Of Art

Art As Freedom

Art gives us the ability to express ourselves. These artworks by Nicole and Ophelia showcase that... art is a way of life, a way of looking at things, a new mindset.   The freedom to express oneself has always been one of the most basic parts of the human condition. Art just gives us a wider range of that.   Art's role in the world, it's most important: it is to make people happy. It is to make people feel talented, good about themselves. It is not about money or materialistic things.

As tourist attraction

Even on quiet Thursday afternoon, art museums around the world are swarming with people, all clamoring to see art pieces.
Art attracts tourists. It's simple. The Mona Lisa alone attracts over 6 million people from all over the world-even in the midst of the economic crisis. These tourists bring much needed tourist dollars. Viewing the Mona Lisa also mean s staying at a Parisian hotel, eating at a Parisian restaurant and spending at Parisian shops-all contributing to the revenue generated from holidaymakers.
So while a piece of art costs millions or even billions, in the long run, it contributes a lot to the economics of a city or country.

Art as A Viable Career

Art used to be a career that seemed to lead to nothing but a lifetime filled with rejection, despair, depression and poverty. This stereotype was caused by the lives of artists like Vincent Van Gogh (see our Notable Artists page) whose paintings were rejected all his life, and who cut off his ear in a fit of passionate depression after a fight with his friend. What parent would want that to happen to their child.

But more and more, art is becoming a good career choice. Many artists have reached international fame levels, and become quite well off in the process. An example would be the British artist Damien Hirst, who shot to fame with his art: animals being preserved in formaldehyde.

Also, art is also proving a great investment. Art, if high quality, only increases in value to millions of dollars as time goes by. A career as an art investor is very lucrative!

Art Benefit Studies... JUST LIKE MUSIC!

School is one of the biggest parts of our lives, being teenagers. We spend almost on-third of our day at school. So when something like art is found to benefit our studies... it's simply MARVELLOUS!
Learning to learn and problem solving skills are higher level skills that students need in their daily lives, as opposed to the mindless repetition that often features in academic study. Art is a way to practice these skills.
Artistically trained students work with greater detail, have better critical reasoning skills, and have the ability to predict findings from information. Students without a strong art background are prone to just memorizing facts, and will not be able to do these tasks as effectively.

Urban Beauty

This are some of a series of photos on the beauty of urban life, taken by a friend, Linda Cheung. Linda has given us full permission to reproduce these photos.   Even a simple road, with endless streams of cars running along it, can still be beautiful. It is things like this that make the world seem a bit less crazy and heartless.   The urban landscape has proved inspirational to many, and we can only hope that more people will see this beauty and appreciate it.

Art as Beauty In The Midst Of Ugliness

Art is everywhere, regardless of whether you know where to look or not.

As our cities turn from shows of our culture into soulless dystopias of steel, smoke and concrete, we are losing our eye for the beauty in our everyday lives.

A hundred years ago, our ancestors would have been able to see the life and vitality in the midst of beautiful landscapes, clear skies and rolling hills. It's true that the landscapes have been covered by cities, that the skies have turned grey and that the life that we once saw in the surrounding vegetation and wildlife has turned into a grudging appreciation of honking cars and businesspeople that all look the same in their black suits.

But though our surroundings have changed, (and it can be depressing!), the artistic beauty that we can find in our daily lives is still there.

There are those who still find beauty among all this madness, and who bring this beauty to those who feel depressed with the lack of life that civilization has brought with it.

Those who see the beauty in the midst of the ugliness are carrying out the most important role of art.

The role to inspire.

The Role That Art Plays In My Life

We want to show what people think about art and the role that it plays for them in their daily lives, to show how art can help you in many ways, and how it affects you.

  • Art is one of the best things in the world! Even though I'm not that good at art, I sometimes draw potraits or random cartoons of my favorite celebrities. Art is just something to be enjoyed. IN these modern times,it's just a hobby

  • I love dancing and dancing would not be the same without music! A routine would lose its appeal. Music is necessary to a good routine. Dance=Art Music = Art
    Art is my life.

  • Art is a way of life. I draw every day and it is away to express myself. I love drawing anime. Art is life, like honey to bees.

  • My Mom stared forcing me to learn the violin last month. After a week istarted to enjoy it. I love challenges. My classmate Renee Yeh watches me play so she can help me improve. Music is a kind of art and the violin has made me very artistic.

  • Art is like a dimension to someone else's life. When we look at a piece of art we might be able to have a connection with it, even if it was made by a person who died 200+ years before one was born. Art is wonderful.
