Saving the World: Effects
Biosphere
-
Endangered Habitat
When development or deforestation occurs, the area will be completely wiped out. This will leave no trees or underground comfort to the animals that live there. This will encourage the animals to search for a new habitat, mostly nearby cities or housing areas. They will disturb humans and when that happens, chaos will take place. Do you dare to see these animals killed or captured?
-
Extinction of Species
This is a response to the endangered habitat. When habitats are destroyed, the animals will have nowhere to live. When this happens, the place where they had spent all their lives in, the place where they are most familiar with and the place in which they search for food and water will vanish. They will be helpless after that and when the right time comes, Death will grip them and sooner or later, they will be extinct. Are you willing to let these animals go before your grandchildren see them?
Lithosphere
-
Erosion
Due to human activities, the lithosphere is affected mostly through soil erosion. Mismanaged building construction requires a lot of land and more land needs to be cleared. The same goes for roads and highways where a lot of the lithosphere is affected to improve transportation. Back to the old topic, deforestation contributes to soil erosion. The canopies that once functioned to cover the soil from getting eroded by heavy downpour are gone and there are no roots to support the stability of the soil structures.
-
Indestructible Wastes
Do you know that you are affecting the lithosphere by littering? People dispose wastes by burying them in landfill sections or just littering instead of using dustbins provided. In fact, the dumping of plastics or chemical materials will just worsen the condition as they take a very long time to be eliminated, hence the lithosphere will be covered mostly with indestructible wastes. Other than that, wastes from industries will worsen the soil condition because of the chemicals contained from heavy metals such as mercury and lead. These wastes will not decay unlike organic materials so excessive amount of them will harm organisms. The waste materials will contribute to bad smell and serious diseases because of the bacterias and toxic present.
-
Degradation
The using of chemicals on plantations affect most of the lithosphere because they contain dangerous substances to degrade the soil fertility. Pesticides, insecticides (organochlorines and organophosphates) and herbicides are used as pests, insects and weed repellents. The chemicals contained are too intense and is not suitable for the soil causing degradation.
-
Physical Change Of Landscape
When mining of minerals and ore occur, holes are dug. They then become mining areas. These mining areas will alter or change completely the landscape of the spot. As a result, trees, animals and aquatic creatures that once ruled the area will go extinct or run away. They will then go into human areas and reek havoc. And once the miners are done with the minerals in the area, they go away, leaving the area without any restoration efforts.
Hydrosphere
-
Aquatic Creatures
Pollution of the world's hydrosphere will harm the aquatic life plus reduce the ability for them to reproduce. The waste products will destroy the valuable and unique corals which is also the habitat of marine life.
-
Humans' Needs
Not only will it affect the rivers, oceans and seas, it will also affect our need for water for our daily routine. The tap water in our homes will be dirty and polluted. Thus, it is not be safe for drinking, cooking and other domestic uses. A lot of money will be spent on water filters just to get safer and clean water for our uses.
-
Fisheries Economy
One of the world's largest income comes from the fisheries obtained mostly in the Asia Pacific. Pollution will affect the fisheries economy, especially for the common fishermen who make a living entirely from this industry.
-
Tourism
Any form of pollution will definitely affect the tourism industry of a particular country. Same goes for water pollution which is the main problem for most of the countries. Tourists are looking for a place where they can indulge in crystal clear, blue water and relax. Pollution will reduce the rate of tourism, hence giving the country a bad image to the eyes of the world.
-
Acid Rain
Acid rain is formed when polluted water is evaporated into the air and produces toxicity clouds. When it is condensed, the rain that pours is acidic and it will corrode the buildings, rusting even the best quality metal and increase the acid nutrient in the soil. Not only that, humans will get skin cancer. These effects will cost more money, to repair the buildings, metals and medicines. As for the soil, it will take time to find a better place for plants to grow.
Atmosphere
-
Breathing Difficulties or Discomfort
This is the most obvious effect of air pollution. If we continue dumping poison into the air, the air that we breathe, wouldn't we get poisoned too? Examples of these poisons are Carbon Monoxide, which can combine with red blood cells faster than oxygen, therefore sufficating you. In areas with too much air pollution, people will have to wear face masks to go out in the open. In certain parts of the world, air pollution can actually cause more than 5% of deaths in the region. In 1986, lake Nyos, Cameroon, spewed out 1.6 million tons of Carbon Dioxide which resulted in the death of 1700 people.
-
Haze or Smog
Haze is formed by floating dust particles and smoke which is trapped by weather conditions. Haze can drastically reduce visibility and it is a potential health threat. Haze usually occurs in large cities such as Los Angeles and Kuala Lumpur.
-
Acid Rain
Continuous input of Sulphur Dioxide in the air can lead to acid rain. Acid rain is formed when Sulphur Dioxide combines with the water droplets in the clouds. Acid rain can destroy buildings, roads and even crops. It can also contaminate water, increase the acidity of the soil and cause serious health problems.
-
Depletion Of the Ozone Layer
The Ozone layer is vital to us as it prevents deadly Ultra Violet rays from reaching the Earth. The Ozone layer is depleted through continuous input of Chlorofluorocarbon into the atmosphere. Ultra Violet rays can cause skin cancer, mutation and cataracts. It can also have economic effects such as destroy crops and livestock.
-
Global Warming
Currently, the largest threat air pollution has imposed upon us is global warming. Global warming is caused by the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is a natural way of warming the Earth. But, when large amounts of greenhouse gases, such as Carbon Dioxide, are dumped into the atmosphere, hardly any heat can escape and the Earth "overheats". Global warming can have devastating effects such as, extreme weather conditions, climate change, melting the polar ice caps, intensive flooding in low-lying areas and even health problems.
