Alternative Fuels

No matter how hard we try to conserve fossil fuels, they will eventually vanish from our world. However,we have alternative fuels to satisfy our everyday needs. Over the past few years, scientists have developed some promising alternatives to take the place of fossil fuels. Most of these alternatives are more environmentally friendly than fossil fuels. Some of these alternatives include Bio-energy, Solar energy, Wind energy, Hydro energy and Geothermal energy. These promising sources of energy can help rebuild the world to be a clean, green sanctuary for mankind, plants and animals alike.

Alternative Energy Sources

  • Solar Energy

Solar energy comes from the sun. It is a limitless source of energy and the most readily available source of energy. Solar energy is harnessed through the use of photovoltaic cells and concentrating solar power. Solar energy is one of the most promising alternative fuels ever. Solar energy is very effective and does not give out harmful gases like fossil fuels. The only problem is, it is costly. Currently, Japan is one of the leading countries in solar power development. Solar power needs to be backed up by wind power on cloudy days or in the winter. Did you know that 30 days of sunshine can outmatch all the energy mankind has used? Also, a solar plant covering 4% of the worlds desert area can supply energy to the whole world.

  • Wind Energy

Wind energy is another one of the most promising alternatives in the world as wind is supplied to us almost daily. Wind power is generated through wind turbines. Wind energy has been used for thousands of years to propel boats and sailing ships. Windmills were used for agricultural purposes and houses were ventilated by wind in ancient times. Currently, countries such as Germany and Netherlands are the leading users of Wind power.

  • Water Energy

Water energy comes in three forms, they are hydro, wave and tidal energy. Water energy is generated by spinning a turbine, tidal fans which are like wind turbines, or moving a piston to generate electricity. Water energy is very reliable as tides, waves and rivers are always moving. Currently, China is one of the most advanced countries to generate water energy.

  • Geothermal Energy

Geothermal energy comes from heat generated by the molten interior of the Earth. These extreme heat conditions heat underground water reserves. As it heats, pressure builds up and when the pressure is too high, the water will erupt as a geiser. The geiser or just steam from these undergrund water reserves is used to spin a turbine and generate electricity. This electricity is used for a variety of purposes, from industrial activities to heating homes. Geothermal energy is used in countries that are located in volcanically active regions such as Iceland.

  • Bio Energy

Currently, one of the latest and best ways of obtaining bio-energy is by collecting all organic wastes, storing them in an enclosed chamber and waiting for them to decompose. This process will generate methane, which is then burned, like fossil fuels, to generate electricity. Currently India is one of the most advanced countries in this field.

Conserving Fossil Fuels

Conserving fossil fuels isn't just a matter for industrial companies and the government, it is the job of every individual. Other than using alternative fuels, we can also help reduce the intake of coal, gas & petroleum by doing our part. Here are some simple things that will cause a big difference.

Conserving Fossil Fuels

  • Public Transportation

Instead of driving your own vehicle, try using public transportation like the bus or train. This will reduce the amount of car exhaust fumes and will also prevent traffic jams.

  • Enjoy fresh air!

Reducing the need of coal and petroleum by conserving energy spent on air conditioners and heaters. Go to the local swimming pool if you're feeling a little warm, or take a long hot bath if it's cold outside.

  • Wash your clothes!

Fill a laundry machine completely before running a cycle. If you only halfa load of laundry you will not only waste electricity that is generated by fossil fuels, you will waste water too!

  • Keep it inflated.

Do you know that your car's tires also play a part in conserving petrol? Make sure your tires are always in best shape as under-inflated tires tend to need more gas to burn.

  • Slow down!

The speed limit is there for a reason. Not only to save lives but it also helps to conserve fuel. The faster you drive, the more fuel you consume.

  • Turn off the engine!

If you're going to wait for a friend or family for more then 5 minutes, then we suggest you turn off the engine. Restarting the car will cost less fuel then waiting for that long.
