What is global warming?
Global warming is the increase of the Earth’s average temperature. Since the 19th century, the Earth has experienced a significant increase in its temperature. There is also an increase in the level of greenhouse gases, causing more heat from the Sun to be trapped in the atmosphere. For decades, cars, factories and other sources like deforestation has emitted billions of tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. These proved that human are to blame for the cause of global warming.
Causes of Global Warming
The Earth is kept warm because of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the every same thing that has caused global warming. Carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane are examples of greenhouse gases. They trap heat in the Earth’s atmosphere to give the Earth a suitable temperature for living things to live in but an excessive emission of these gases will cause a serious global warming to occur.
Effects of Global Warming
The increase in the amount of greenhouse gases in the ozone layer has caused global warming. This will cause more heat to be trapped in the atmosphere, thus changing the climate and weather patterns, influencing the seasons. Severe floods, storms and other disasters will cause many harm. The impact on the animals, plants and us will be great.
Firstly, it is the increase of temperature worldwide. As the temperature rises, the rate of evaporation will be higher thus it will cause disasters like droughts or floods .
Secondly, it is the increase of sea level. As the temperature rises, ice and snow are melting as a result. Weather patterns will change too. As the high temperature will expand the water bodies, sea levels will rise. Many settlements that are near the coastal areas will be flooded. Many houses will be destroyed, causing widespread disasters.
Green House Effects
The greenhouse effect is the increased temperature of the Earth which is caused by the heat that is trapped by the Earth’s atmosphere. The Sun’s rays that reach into the Earth will be absorbed or be reflected to the atmosphere. 70% of the rays, as the form of infrared radiation (heat), are then absorbed by the land and oceans, warming the planet while 30% will escape back into space.
This process will make the Earth a warm and comfortable place for living things to live in as the Earth will neither be too hot nor too cold. If the Earth does not have an atmosphere, it will be a lot colder.
For the past few years, the levels of greenhouse gases have increased and due to the high levels of greenhouse gases, the Earth’s atmosphere will trap more heat. The Earth will thus, get hotter. This proves that with the more greenhouse gases are in the atmosphere, the more heat will be trapped and thus the temperature will be higher.
In what way have we contributed to the greenhouse effects?
• Carbon dioxide emitted from factories and power plants
• Factories and power plantations are the main sources that release huge amounts of carbon dioxide which causes the increased amount of greenhouse gases.
• The following are some gases released due to human activities:
1. Carbon dioxide is released from
-the burning of fossil fuels, forests and wood products
• 2.Nitrous oxide is released from
-vehicle exhaust pipes
-during the combustion of solid waste and fossil fuels
• 3. CFC’s is released from
-the use of foam packaging and solvents in industries
-the coolants in refrigerators, air-conditioners and machinery in factories.
