Causal Factors contd......
Entertainment of human beings.
Wild animals & birds are trapped and caged for entertainment of man. Elephants, lions & tigers who are supposed to roam in the jungle are forced through physical torture to perform acts in the circus. The birds who could otherwise sail in the open blue sky and sing in the open unbounded nature in flocks are put in tiny cages just for the pleasure of the human.
Needless abuse of and cruelty to animals
This is probably the most glaring example of man-animal disharmony and the subject of highest concern. Truly speaking, in a materialistic, consumerism-oriented world with declining human values and self-centered attitudes where words like compassion, love, affection etc sound alien even in human context, we can not expect these attributes to be extended to other lesser beings. Things like kicking a stray dog, scaling a live fish or killing a non-venomous snake simply because it crossed ways with ours happen daily in our life and they seem to bother our conscience the least – if at all. The cow is over-milked and the calves are made to starve .After exploitation throughout its prime time, the old creature finds its shelter lost and left to look after itself.
Some people get cruel intentionally by depriving them of food and shelter, confining them in a narrow space or even killing them. In most such cases, there is a psychological problem with the perpetrator of such violence. However, most of the cruelty to which the animals are subjected to is unintentional neglect because of our failure to understand the need or liking/disliking of the animals. We put the parrot in a small cage and feed her; teach her to mimic human voices; we marvel at the show of her acrobatics. But we never think that a bird in the cage can not be happy – she has always the dream of the open sky in her eyes; the call of the forest in her heart.
