“The power to exercise choice and make decisions without constraint from within or without; autonomy; self-determination”(Encyclopedia Britannica, 2008). This is one of the thousand definitions or meanings that the word “freedom” has. The reason why this word has so many definitions, is beacuse it depends on the way of thinking of each person; To some, it is about political rights, to others of actions and thinking ways, and more.
Different Perspectives Regarding Freedom
You can see freedom each day of your life, when you choose what you want, dressing on your way, making your own decisions, and more. Maybe you think that freedom has the same meaning for the entire world, but each country has it own idea of freedom.
1. In Cuba the meaning of freedom is that their government control all their life, you can see this in the restriction to students in having access to literature, Internet and other outside information. All this outside information has to be seen by the government firstly and they would decide if that could be shown to the common citizen. You could not believe in this concept of freedom, but for Cubans this is a free style of living.
2. In Afghanistan, the machismo is still the way that people believe in. Women can only do the home labor and they can’t even imagine having jobs like men do.
3. In China the government only allows to have one son.
4. In Africa most poor children are treated like animals, and make them work like slaves.
If you think that none of these countries has freedom, you are wrong because en each of these countries, they think that this is normal and maybe they think that in your country you do not have freedom.
