The first solar powered machine was made in 1866 by Auguste Mouchout. He use a parabolic trough to produce steam to drive his machine.

Statistics

As of now, solar energy is only at 25% efficiency. That means we lose 75% of the possible energy it recieves. even with this low efficiency, if we covered the Gobi desert with solar panels we could produce 20 times the worlds current energy usage.
