Humans have been using wind power for more than 5500 years to propel all manner of boats, and to create some natural ventilation inside of many buildings. Its mechanical use came much latter in history however. The first historic mention of a windmill occurred in the 1rst century AD. The first modern wind turbines were built in the early 1980s, although more efficient designs are still being developed.
Other info about wind power
An estimated 72 TW of wind power on the Earth potentially can be commercially viable, compared to the 12 TW of total global power used in 2005. Due to the low energy density of wind several hundred wind turbines are required to replace a conventional power station. The only affect that wind turbines have on nature is the death of birds and bats from collisions.
