Exploring& Expanding through Creative Writing

Communication is fundamental to our society. Writing creatively teaches students to think abstractly and develops literacy. Learning to write creatively will teach students to come up with their own ideas. It will teach them to express themselves in a way that interests them.

Creative writing will not be a regular class, but instead it will be integrated into every class once a week. That way students will learn to write about different topics and create stories that relate to specific classes.

Literature vs. Written Work

In many public schools the type of literature varies on the district. Some schools offer a literature class that is more rich and substancial, while others cover only the main ideas. At the Schol of the Furture, the literature classes will cover many genres and times, and it will give the students a more accurate idea of what true literature is and how they can find a type that they enjoy reading.

Most students don't even really understand what "literature" entails. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, literature is "writings in prose or verse especially writings having excellence of form or expression and expressing ideas of permanent or universal interest." All written work is not considered to be literature, and students need to begin making connections and learning to identify literature.

Since there are so many types of literature, the students will be able to choose which type of class they would like to take. The type of literature class is decided based off the type of story they will cover. For example, one class could be novels and short stories while another class covered plays and poems.

Reading is a major part of getting a full and complete education. In many high schools the students barely read because they lack interest or motivation. But with the way this type of literature course is set up the students are more likely to learn something because they are enjoying it.
