Do you consider yourself a big surf fan? Or maybe, you have watched some videos on the Internet where experimented surfers catch tremendous waves and get out of them with no harms. But I have great news for you. You don’t have to be an expert to surf; this sport is for anybody who dares getting in the water and surf the unlimited Ocean.
You may have researched about the best beaches for surfing in the World, but you might not have realized that in the southernmost country in America there are great beaches as well. Chile has a huge potential in regards to surf experience and waves.
Because Chile is not a very well-known country, its surf potential beaches may not be as known as well. But it is not completely true. Did you know that surf in Chile moves around 70 million dollars a year? Many tourists from Germany, Brazil, Holand, France and the US, among others, come every year to this amazing country to be astonished by the diversity of beaches and waves that Chile provides.
As an example, I will focus in two of the huge amount of beaches from this southern country: Punta de Lobos and Curanipe.
Punta de Lobos is considered to be the most extreme place to surf, due to its waves which can reach the 6 meters of length, or a little more. The waves in this beach provide you a kilometer long left aproximately. It is not quite recommended for novices, because besides of the big waves, it’s also difficult and dangerous to get in the water.
To accomplish getting into the sea, you must walk over rocks, swim through a turbulent water channel, climb “morros” which are big rock promontories, and wait for the right moment to dive into the water. If you believe you can handle this, you must consider anyways the water temperature, which is very cold. It is necessary to wear a wetsuit with a minimum of 4/3 mm thickness, boots, gloves and cap. The surfboard length required for big waves in Punta de Lobos is of 8,5 feet.
When can you expect surf?
You can expect surf all year round in this adventure full beach. Even though this beach is not recommended for novices as I mentioned before, it counts with a variety of surf schools that offer instruction and a full line of rentals needed for the practice of this sport.
One of the most expected events according to Punta de Lobos/ Pichilemu (6 kilometers away) is the “Gran Ola”, meaning Big Wave. This event, that consists in a 7 meters long wave, is expected by lots of people coming from everywhere around the World. The “Gran Ola” is supposed to appear one of these days, so there are already many chileans and tourists waiting for the famous happening.
I encourage you to try. I surely believe that anyone can surf, or at least try, because as I have been told, it is a wordless experience that must be lived at least once in your life. I invite you to go to Punta de Lobos and Pichilemu to see the “Gran Ola”, that by its majesty, it may encourage you to prove yourself and get in the water. Come visit Chile’s beaches, because is not only the beauty of the seasides we can show, but further than that, is a extreme way to keep in contact with nature.
