## What was Egypt?

Egypt was a civilization that lasted thousands of years. Around the Nile river (the only river that they had for their survival), they were able to fertilize the desert.

The Egyptians became especially famous thanks to the pyramids that served as tombs for the Pharaohs, and the sphinxes are known worldwide.

Did you know that the Pharaoh was considered a living God? Ramses was the greatest Pharaoh who lived in Egypt.

Due to our information, the Egyptian was first numbering system developed by the civilizations that lived in the valley of the Nile river, in northeastern Africa.

## The history of the Egyptian numbering system

The Egyptian numbering system was a decimal system written both in hieroglyphs and in hieratic. The Egyptian system is a very creative invention, each stick was a number 1.

1+1+1=3 |||
1+1+1+1=4 ||||

3 |||

8 ||||||||
9 |||||||||

When it arrives to ten it is not a stick anymore || It is a heel that means 10.

1
10 =10
2
10 =100
3
10 =1.000

When it arrives to ten it is not a stick anymore || It is a heel that means 10.

1
10 =10
2
10 =100
3
10 =1.000

1: stick
10: heel
100: cord roll
1.000: lotus flower
10.000: index finger
100.000: fish
1.000.000: man with hands up

3 cord rolls + 2 heels + 2 sticks, ie 100 + 100 + 100 + 10 + 10 + 1 + 1 = 322

They used division, addition, subtraction, etc., but their largest number was 9.999.999 because they didn’t have many symbols available. In their system each symbol had the same value no matter in which position it was placed. In this point the system differed a lot of ours.
Their numbering system didn’t have the zero.<b/>
