The marvelous salt lakes

Today, led by Miss Huang, we went to ISL to collect and learn some information on salt lakes. At first, we arrived at the hall on the first floor. There were many salt flowers with various amazing postures: some look like houses, some look like big round mushrooms, others resemble dancing girls. Students can not wait to record these with their cameras. It is my first time to see so beautiful natural salt flowers. How marvelous our nature is!Then we went to the library where there were many books neatly placed on rows of shelves. The administrator gave us a brief introduction to the books. Those are books of different professional studies printed in Chinese, English, Japanese and other languages. The library has more than 1,000 categories composed of 140,000 books. After that, we visited the exhibition hall on the fourth floor. Under the neon lights, the hall looks spectacularly pleasant. There is a huge broccoli-shaped salt flower in the centre of the hall. The professional presenter explained the pictures on the wall one by one. At that time, I began to know exactly what salt lakes are: They are lakes that have a salt content of over 50 gram per liter. The salt lakes in our country have four features, multi, huge, rich, and various. China has the largest number of salt lakes, which are around 1000. The salt lakes are mainly distributed in Qinghai, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, and Xinjiang, covering an area of 40,000 square km which account for 93% of all domestic salt lakes in terms of area. Salt lakes in China are rich in resources and types.

The marvelous salt lakes

where we can see, thenardite, halite, gypsum, polyhalite, langbeinite, celestine, pinnoite, glauberite, lithium salts, trona, and picromerite can be found and applied in industry, agriculture and our daily life. For example: potash fertilizer, can be used in agriculture; Soda, Glauber's salt, rock salt, etc, can be used in industrial production; sodium chloride (edible salt) is essential in our lives, and closely related to our daily lives. Later on, we visited the laboratories, seeing a lot of large equipment. Some of these instruments are used for measuring solids and others are for liquids, all of which can provide accurate and reliable data for scientific experiments. We also watched ISL scientists doing experiment. They put some unknown chemical reagents into beakers in which the liquids sequentially turned into light yellow, light purple, and pink in a short time. So amazing! We were all attracted by the processes.
The visit has greatly broadened my view. I benefited a lot and formed a preliminary understanding of salt lakes. What a cornucopia of Qaidam Basin! There are so many mineral resources; there are so many amazingly beautiful salt flowers. You will never know its glamour unless you take a gaze. I will study hard and want to be a scientist when I grow up.

Meditation after visiting ISL

Yesterday we followed our teachers and paid a visit to Qinghai Institute of salt lakes (ISL). It is so amazing! I have heard about salt flowers, but I never seen them. When coming to the hall of ISL, we saw a lot of salt flowers enclosed with glass boxes. They have a variety of shapes: some are like mushroom, some are like houses, some are like people, some are like…We picked up our cameras and shot down the salt flowers. This is good for our resources collection. There is some introduction about salt lakes on both sides. From the introduction, we came to know that salt flowers are some beautiful crystals formed during crystallization processes in salt lakes. Due to different concentrations and compositions of the brines, and varying duration of evolution, salt flowers with different postures were formed during the crystallization processes. They look like artistic creations by our god. Salt flowers were shaped as pearls, coral, pavilions, or animals, appearing in clumps, in flakes, or in tufts, decorating the salt lake into a fairyland. Then we came to the library and listened to the staff there giving introduction. She told us that many books are out-of-print books, hence invaluable. In the middle of the library, there is a pot of salt flowers. We touched and felt them like corals. After that, we went up onto the fourth floor. There is an exhibition room, illuminated with purple lights. The moment we went in, it seemed small, but after the staff finished explaining, an hour had passed. Then we realized that what we know is even less than one-tenth of the knowledge learned here. Later, we went to another laboratory, there staffs were busy doing experiments, and they showed us a particular experiment. Firstly, one staff took a bottle with water inside and added some chemical reagent. The liquor instantly changed into dark purple. Then another chemical reagent was added, the liquor turned into yellow. It was so amazing!

Visiting Qinghai Institute of Saline Lakes

Today, we visited Qinghai Institute of Saline Lakes. The moment we entered the hall, we saw many white and yellow salt flowers. They are so beautiful! Next, we took many photos of the salt lakes from different angles. They look wonderful. The salt flowers are shaped like pavilions, old men, or other things. We did not have understanding of salt flowers like these, so we should learn.Magnesium reserves in the Qaidam salt lakes amount to be around 4.81 billion tons, which are cheap raw materials for the production of high-quality magnesium products, low-cost raw material resources. Salt lakes are lakes in their late stages of evolution, featuring high salt consents. Usually, a lake with a salinity higher than 3.5% (35 g / L) is called a salt lake.
We visited quite a few places today. I am very happy that we have got to know what salt flowers are. A worthy trip, isn't it?

Isn't the salt flower in the picture funny? I think it is very interesting, just like two persons who are face to face. Buddies, what is your opinion? Come and leave me a message.

Appreciation of Visiting Qinghai Institute of

Today we visited Qinghai Institute of Saline Lakes (ISL). I am very happy about that. As soon as we crossed the gate of ISL's main building, we saw many salt flowers in glass cases. They have mang different shapes: some are like lotus leaves, some are like mushrooms, some are like people, some are like dishes, of which took many pictures. There are a lot of information on resources and development of salt lakes on the glass bulletin board beside the glass cases. Salt lakes in China have the characterisitics of abundance, vastness, richness, and variety according to the pictures and descriptions. Then, we went to the library, where there are many books on salt flowers and salt lakes. Next, we came to the exhibition hall on the fourth floor. We saw anhydrous glauber's salt, rock salt, crystal salt, gypsum, polyhalite, anhydrous potassium-magnesium alumina, celestite, and so on. All these minerals are discovered in Qinghai salt lakes. I've not only understood what salt flowers and salt lakes are, but also acquired much new knowledge. What a great day!

+ I am taking pictures of salt flowers. So beautiful! They appear in various shapes.   Amazing salt lakes. Exactly right!   The teacher is teaching us chemical elements. I will learn the knowledge in middle school.
