A Treasure of Qinghai Province(1)

—- Travel Notes on the Crystal

Treasure of Qinghai Province(1)

--Travel Notes on the Crystal
As we all know that the Qarhan Salt Lake is the crystal treasure of Qinghai Province. During the weekend, my little friends and I planned to travel to Golmud by train and hoped to see the attractive landscapes of the Qarhan Salt Lake to uncover its mysterious veil.

After a longtime train trip, we finally approached our destination, Qardan Salt Lake. Overlooking through the window, there was just little vegetation and desolation on the vast Gobi. Look, so many small square earth grids with grass nearby. What are they used for? The guide told us that these earth grids were used to control wind and sand. Looking further beyond, we saw lines of telegraph poles standing by the roads and being in various shapes such as V and herringbone, etc. as well as other figures that were never identified or seen before. Looking into the distance, what were those hillocks for? They were generally thought for the sake of wind control, but I thought they were piled up because of the perennial wind and quicksand. Traveling through vast Gobi and fords along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway with its nickname of Heavenly Route on the roof of the world, the longest and highest railway in China so far,, and passing by several color steel plants, we finally got to the Salt Lake of Golmud City, our dreamed place through the tough train travel.

In Golmud, the General Office Building firstly greeted us. It was said that there were over sixty buildings in the Salt Lake Community. Tall and straight willows stood along the both sides of streets as if valiant soldiers safeguarded the homeland. The paved streets were so wide that more than a dozen of carriages could be driven in the same line, and I was sure that even over eight hundred or one thousand people can have their parade here without causing any congestion.

We took our nice lunch break in the downtown area before we resumed our trip up to the Salt Lake by bus. I enjoyed the wild natural scener

Treasure of Qinghai Province(2)

--Travel Notes on the Crystal
Two hours later, we finally got to the Potassium Fertilizer Company and caught a glimpse of an artificial salt crystal which looked like a giant tree in front and a huge fire pan from the back with a mass fire burning inside. I guess that it must symbolize the prosperous business of the Salt Lake Group. It took us more than ten minutes by bus to get to the saltpans. Jesus ! I was shocked by the saltpans stretching to the horizon with floating pipes on the lake which looked like a giant dragon from a faraway distance and a centipede from a short distance. I just couldn't see the end of the saltpans.

The Salt Lake looked as it were a piece of green and flawless emerald. We were told that the bottom was full of all sorts of treasures. The salt crystals floating on the surface felt like candyfloss to tempt our appetite. My peers couldn't control their excitement to open their arms to embrace the nature, to pick up salt crystals that were shining in the sunshine. How nice it was! I wondered if it was the common salt we had every day. I just couldn't resist my temptation any more and started to have a taste of it without being noticed, “Wow! It's terribly salty!” my yelling made my pals laugh heartily.

The most exciting thing was that the guide took us to get on the salt dredger which had cost over RMB100 million yuan. Looking back from the dredger, salt crystals were everywhere under the bridge and they looked really like corals. After a while, the dredger started its engine and moved on The front spoondrifts rushed upward along with the back ones chasing behind them. However, the back bubbles weren't tense but swayed. The great waves caused by the speeding dredger were like a moving dragon and seemed to surge after the dredger. All these made me wonder whether the lake water became frozen in such a cold day? The guide gave me a definite answer that the water here didn't freeze due to a great deal of minerals conta
