Mythical Salt Lake
以前，我总以为人们吃的盐全是从海水里提炼出来的，到了青海高原之后，才知道高原还有产盐的湖哩！
I had always thought that the salt for people’s daily diet was refined from seawater only. I didn’t know that the lakes which were capable of producing salt were lying on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau until I came to Qinghai.
盐湖是怎么形成的呢？老年人给我讲了一个神话：当年孙悟空大闹天宫的时候，二郎神被他杀得大败，一直逃到这荒僻的高原上。二郎神跑得又饥又渴，刚支起锅准备做饭，孙悟空一个筋斗十万八千里早已赶到了，二郎神一看大事不好，拔腿就跑，不了一脚踢翻了锅，一锅水流了出来，流呀，流呀，于是就汇聚成了许多盐湖……其实呀，盐湖是这样形成的：青海高原属于大陆性气候，空气稀薄，常年干旱。湖水是高山上的冰雪融化后淌下来的。雪水一路上带来许多矿物质，水到湖里不能向外流，蒸发量又大，年复一年，这样就把淡水湖变成盐湖了。
We often wonder how the Salt Lake came into being. Once a senior man told me a myth：Long time ago, Monkey King once made a tremendous uproar in the Heavenly Palace and defeated Erlangshen Elohim, who escaped to the desolate plateau and felt extremely hungry and thirsty. When he propped up the wok and prepared to cook some food, Monkey King arrived by a flip which could take himself to the destination from 18,000 km afar. Erlangshen felt so shocked that he knocked down the wok unexpectedly when he attempted to run away from the scene. The water in the wok was streaming out constantly and in the end into a lot of salt lakes…But the fact is that the Salt Lake was formed through a natural wonder. Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is featured with its continental climate with thin air and perennial drought. The thawing water trickles down from the high mountains with numerous of minerals, which can not flow out from the lake, but evaporate greatly year after year so that the freshwater lake has gradually turned into the salt lake.

青海高原上有大大小小几百个盐湖，有许多著名的大盐湖，如：茶卡、柯柯、昆特依、察尔汉等。我到过好几个盐湖，嘿！真像到了盐的世界：路是盐铺的，房子是盐盖的，起伏不断的是盐山，望不到边的是盐海，汽车驶过的是盐桥……走进了大盐湖，阳光一照，满湖满湖的“水晶”，晶莹夺目，光彩照人，加上远处的冰峰雪山，使人感到好像走进了“水晶宫”一样！
Hundreds of salt lakes are scattered on Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with various sizes, and there are a lot of well-known salt lakes, like Chaka, Keke, Kunteyi, Qarhan, etc. I have been to several such salt lakes and when you're here, you would think that you're in a world of salt. Here the roads and houses are made of salt, undulant salt hills and salt bridges are amazing with moving vehicles on them to be surrounded by the vast and boundless salt sea… the Great Salt Lake full of glittering and translucent crystal shining under the sunlight, does give you a sense of crystal palace with the snow-covered peaks as the background.
大盐湖里蕴藏着数不尽的食盐。那个察尔汉盐湖，十分广阔，湖面上结着硬硬的盐盖，远看起伏不断，像大海的波浪。它的盐可以供全国人民吃6万多年。在察尔汉盐湖上，只要在盖子上打一个洞，用勺子就可以从洞里舀出天然的结晶盐来。舀完了这个洞再打一个洞，过不了多久，原来的洞就又长满了盐。真像传说中取之不尽、用之不竭的“聚宝盆”一样！多奇特、多有趣啊！
The Great Salt Lake contains a mass of salt. The vast Qarhan Salt Lake covered with a hard salt layer was undulant like the ocean waves from far distance, the salt from it could be supplied to the people of all the country for more than 60,000 years. The interesting thing is that you can use a scoop to bail out the natural crystalline salt from a hole dug into the layer. Another hole could be dug and then you would realize that the first hole recovers with salt in a short time，just like the legendary Treasure bowl, the source of which can never be used up. How marvelous and funny it is！
盐湖的确是祖国的“聚宝盆”，除了出产大量的食盐以外，盐湖中还含有数十种盐类矿产，这些矿产是化工、电子、光学、医药等工业的宝贵原料，是建设社会主义祖国的珍贵物资。

煮海为盐的传说
大家听说过夙沙煮海为盐的传说吗？我这就给大家讲讲。
很久很久以前，在山东住着一个原始部落，部落里有个人名叫夙沙，他聪明能干，臂力过人，善于使用网。每次外出打猎，都能捕获很多的野兽。有一天夙沙在海边煮鱼吃，他提着陶罐从海里打半罐水回来，放在火上煮，突然，一头大野牛从眼前飞奔而过，夙沙见了拔腿就追，一阵叫声后，他扛着死牛回来，罐里的水已经熬干了，留下了一层白白的细末。他用手指沾点放到嘴里尝尝，味道既咸又鲜。夙沙用它就着烤熟的野牛肉吃起来，味道美味至极。那白白的细末便是从海水中熬出来的盐。

白鹿饮泉：早在先秦时代，有一个猎人叫袁氏，在大巴山深处的宝源山上发现了一只雪白的鹿。猎人非常喜爱它，不忍心用剑射死它，只是紧追不舍，从山顶一直追逐到山底的山洞口，白鹿忽然不见踪影，猎人茫然，这是他感觉口渴，见山洞有泉水涌出，于是用手捧着喝，味咸微苦，知道是盐泉，后来这里变成了一个盐镇。为纪念猎人的功绩，盐镇取名为袁溪镇，人们认为那只白鹿是龙，在山洞口打造了一只龙头，让盐泉从龙口喷出，并取名为“白鹿盐泉”，或曰“白龙泉”。
White Deer Spring: It is said that in Pre-Qing Period, a hunter with his surname being Yuan discovered a white deer. The hunter liked it too much to shoot it and chased after it from the top of the mountain to the cave at the foot of the mountain. While the hunter felt disappointed as the white deer disappeared suddenly. The hunter felt thirsty and drank the water which gushed from the cave and tasted salty and bitter. After that, the place became famous for its salt spring. The place was named as Yuanxi Town in order to commemorate the hunter. And the white deer was considered to be a dragon by the people who carved a dragon head with the salt spring gushing out from the mouth.
