Why to eat fruit?

The importance of vitamin C for us

As we know,fruit is rich in vitamin C.But can you tell the importance of vitamin C to us?


  • I learned this story from my biology book of Grade 7:
    A few hundred years ago, the sailors who stayed at sea for a long time were usually gingival bleeding, skin bleeding, sometimes it was very serious, even eventually caused death. However, they got well as soon as the ship landed. Later, doctors found out that the sailors could get many fruits and vegetables to eat when the ship landed while it was hard for them to have fruits and vegetables at sea. And scientists learnt fruits and vegetables have vitamin C. Because of a long-term lack of vitamin C, the sailors got sepsis and caused death.

  • A person usually needs 60 mg of vitamin C every day. A glass of orange juice can provide the most of vitamin C that a person need a day. But that’s not enough. Generally we can get 40mg of vitamin C from a most common glass of chilled orange juice. From the juice squeezed with fresh oranges we can get only 48 mg. The part of the shortage could be supplemented with green leafy vegetables, strawberries, fresh fruit and fruit juice.
