Traditions Around the World
In Russia you get married when you are together for two years. There is no wedding, but you get a license. When ever you get married you have to take a flower to a soldier's grave. You are supposed to have as many kids as possible to increase the population of Russia. In Russia they say Happy Birthday, "Sdnyom rozhdenya." For your birthday you get a gift from your teacher at school such as books, pencils, and flowers, and you get handmade gifts from students. When you get cake or pie for your birthday then no one else gets cake except you! Their usual game involes a clothesline where prizes are hung and each person cuts one down and takes it home. Some food that French people like are Quiche Lorraine, a pastry dish with fillings of eggs, cream, and chopped bacon. They also like bread, cheese, and wine. Also when you were born someone would plant a tree and if that tree grows strong and healthy you would too. They believed that evil spirits searched people on the people's birthdays. What the birthday guests did they surrounded the birthday person giving them gifts and happy thoughts. They believe that the evil spirits get warded away when they do that. Earlier in time people believed that only kings and royalty were important enough to have a birthday celebration. French people say Happy Birthday like this, "Joyeux Anniversaire." I got this information from In Mexico they say Happy Birthday like this, "Feliz cumpleanos!" They celebrate two birthday celebrations. The first celebration is where you go tot church for your name or saint's day. The priest blesses you. The second celebration is a regular birthday party! The first party is much quieter. The second party always includes a pinata with delicious candy! This pinata is shaped like an animal, usually a horse. Each child is blind folded and whacks the pinata. When a girl turns 15 she gets a special mass. Then you dance a waltz with your father. After the waltz you get introduced to everyone as a young women! WOW!
