HUMAN RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT
HUMANS AND THEIR BEHAVIOR
Before talking about the schools of the future furthermore, I’d like to explain some conditions which are sometimes found in the developing countries.
THE NATURE
This picture is an example of forest destruction. People have destroyed hectares of forest for their business without considering the risks. In 1997-1998, at least 10 million hectares area damaged or burned down, with the financial loss of 3 American billion dollars. This evidence also get the consequence of Glasshouse emission about 0,81-2,57 Gigaton carbon to atmosphere (it is equivalent with 13%-40% world carbon emission total produced from fossil fuel each year). It means giving contribution to the climate change and global warming.
In 2002 and 2006, for the forest conversion, the fire destroyed the peat areas, we know that the areas are useful for the carbon storage and the bio diversity. The smoke has also made the pollution in the air.
THE BROKEN DAM
Had you ever lived in a place which was in not good condition? The place made you worry about. And suddenly, you got the accident. What did you feel? Regretted it? or you accepted anything had happened in your life?
Have you known Situ Gintung Tragedy in our country, Indonesia? It happened on March 27, 2009. Situ Gintung Dam which has a wide of 21 hectares was built by the Dutch colony in 1933. Initially this dam is used as one of the places for controlling floods. The Dam is old enough. Before the accident happened, the people had seen some cracks on the banks of the Dam. They told the government. However, we didn’t do anything to repair the condition because we believed the Dutch had built the Dam strongly. We find many buildings left by the Dutch lasted for hundred years. In fact, we had miss calculation!
The Situ Gintung tragedy happened because we were not able to calculate the strength of the Dam with the condition. The tragedy has given us a lesson: we should take care of our environment well. As a student, I would like to study the knowledge with which I can develop my country.
