The Verrazano Narrow Bridge

The Verrazano Bridge is named for an Italian named Giovanni Da Verrazzano. He was the first known navigator or explorer who came with a boat and entered New York Harbor and the Hudson River. The Verrazano Bridge is owned by New York City. The Verrazano Bridge was the last project designed by chief engineer Othmar Ammann. He designed the George Washington Bridge, the Bayonne Bridge, the Bronx Whitestone bridge, the Triborough Bridge,and the Throgs Neck Bridge. The construction began in August 13,1959. The New York City mayor Robert F.Wanger cut the ribbion and 5,000 people attended the ceremony.

Staten Island-General Information

Staten Island lies on the New York Bay. Staten Island is 14 miles (23 kilomeeters) long .Staten Island has a population of about 440,000. The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge connects Staten Island to Brooklyn.
Staten Island was bought by the Dutch from the Indians in the 1600's.In 1683, Staten Island was changed to Richmond. In 1975,the name was officially changed back to Staten Island.
