The Legend of the Origami Cranes
An ancient Japanese legend says that anyone who can fold 1000 origami cranes will be granted one wish.
The symbol of origami cranes has became more known because of the story of Sadako Sasaki, and also it became a symbol of world peace through the story.
"Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes" is a children's book written by Eleanor Coerr and published in 1977.
The story follows the life of the main character, Sadako Sasaki, that develops leukemia due to the radiations inflicted by the Hiroshima bombing. She finds out about the myth and starts folding cranes in order to get cured, but sadly, she only manages to make 644 cranes and then she became much too weak and died shortly after. There is a statue with Sadako
at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial.
