Pollutants in water
Polluting Fertilizers
-
Inorganic fertilizers
This is the most widely used fertilizer. It supplies three main elements which are nitrogen, phosphorus (or phosphates), and potassium
-
Phosphorus
Also known as phosphates, phophorus is made up of mineral *apatite. Ground *apatite may be mixed in with soil as a solid fertilizer called rock phosphates. *apatite- Any of a group of minerals consisting essentially of calcium phosphate and usually containing fluorine, chlorine,or hydroxyl or carbonate ions.
-
Organic fertilizers
Made up of different substances including manure, plant matter, sewage water, and wastes from meat-packing plants. These contain smaller nutriants.
Toxic Salt
-
Road Salt
Road salt is the main salt pollutant put on roads during the winter. This lets drivers ride their normal speed, but it does more than that. When the ice on the road melts, it gets into the ground an kills trees and shrubs. Also, it pollutes peoples' drinking wells and rivers and many bodies of freshwater. This may depend on whether your area may use salt to clear the roads.
Toxic Metals
-
Arsenic
Just by getting close to this toxin can mean death. This subtance is found near waste sites where this deadly poison is leaking into water and polluting it horribly.
-
Mercury
This subtance is mostly found during the process of mining. Even though the chances of death is very little from this toxin, it still is very dangerous. This may cause damage to your nervous system and kidneys.
-
Lead
This subtance is one of the most deadly things to get overexposure to. This may mean you work at a factory or a radiator repair shops to have a disease from this. To think that this horrible thing is leaking into water and polluting it, that is a thing we need to try to stop.
-
Barium
Baruim is a silvery-white metal that can react with all the other non-metals, forming often poisinous compounds. Barium can be found in lakes, rivers or streams and can spread very far because it can get into fishes and forms in thier bodies.
-
Chromium
Chromium is a blue-white metal that is hard and very and very corrosion resistant. Chromium can be polished to form a very shiny surface and is templated to other metals to form a protective coating.
-
Antimony
Antimony is a brittle metal of a flaky crystallyine texture. It is a bluish-white and its' compounds are toxic. Antimony is found mostly with other minerals and in stibnite*. *stibnite- A mineral that reflects Antimony content.
-
Copper
Copper is one of the most important metals. It is a reddish with a metallic luster. Copper is a great conductor of heat. Copper is used for household items like pots, pans, lamps, house gutters, and hangers. It is useful for around 7000 years. It gets in water supply from pipes. Copper is also used for locks, plumbing fixtures, dorrknobs, drawer pulls, some roofing, and jewelry.
-
Thallium
When thallium is exposed to air, it exhibits a metallic luster, and soon shows a bluish-Grey color resembling lead. This metal is very soft. It can be cut with a kitchen knife.
-
Beryllium
Beryllium resists exposure to air. It's compounds are very toxic. Aquamarine and emeralds are forms of the mineral Beryl. It has the ability to scratch glass due to a small layer of oxide*. *oxide- Amineral that is combined with oxygen to make another element.
-
Selenium
Selenium is a hexagonal, crystallyne, metal that is a deep red. Selenium is considered to be an essential trace element. However, Selenium can be very toxic, and resembles Arsenic in thier physiological reactions.
What are the main pollutants in dirty water?
The main pollutants in dirty water are sewage and fertilizers which contain nutriants such as nitrates and phosphates which clog up waterways and pollute water. Also,in some polluted water there are parasitic worms. Another main pollutant in dirty water are pesticides that are used on crops to keep bugs from eating them and gets into the earth which gets into the water.
