The Shopping Scene

It has been said that Singapore is a land of shoppers. Shopping malls are everywhere in Singapore, from the heartlands to the city centre.

In the heartlands, malls usually offer local brands such as m)phosis and Tinkerbell. Plenty of them do have outlets of international brands as well though. Tenure in local malls is also often taken up by local families selling things like knick-knacks and stationery.

In the city, Singapore's most famous shopping belt is Orchard Road. The Orchard Road belt boasts many malls containing popular international brands ranging from high-street fashion such as Topshop and Zara, to couture like Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Armani to name a few. Another popular mall is Vivocity, in the Harbourfront area, Singapore's biggest mall.

Those who crave other kinds of shopping can go down to Chinatown or Little India who often offer things not found elsewhere. Mustafa Shopping Centre, a 24 hour mall, is a popular haunt for those seeking good deals. Arab Street is also known for its many quirky and kitsch accessories and items.

Seeking gadgets? Take a trip to Sim Lim Square, a large electronics emporium where practically everything can be gotten. The owners will often let you bargain with them too!

Orchard Road

The place to go for high-end shopping, with posh shopping malls and branded stores such as Louis Vitton lining the road. Nevertheless it is a favourite weekend hangout for young Singaporeans.   Newly installed artworks add on to the aesthetic beauty of Orchard Road.   Buskers are common along Orchard Road, and they come in a wide variety too, such as jazz musicians (as seen above), solo vocalists, and more, adding to the lively atmosphere.

Great Singapore Sale!

Every year, around mid-year, there is an annual sale called the Great Singapore Sale (GSS). Malls all over the country extend their opening hours, and slash prices by as much as 90% in some places. Singaporeans eagerly await this event and many tourists (especially those from neighbouring countries) descend upon Singapore in droves during this period.
