Pre-school education in Singapore is a 3-year programme consisting of Nursery, Kindergarten 1 and Kindergarten 2. It is usually five days a week with schooling hours ranging from 3 to 4 hours daily, with about two sessions a day.
The daily programme of each level includes learning activities that develop language and literacy skills, basic number concepts, simple science concepts, social skills, creative and problem solving skills, appreciation of music and movement and outdoor play. Children will learn in two languages, English as the first language and Chinese, Malay or Tamil as a Mother Tongue language.
Kindergartens in Singapore are run by the private sector, including community foundations, religious bodies, social organisations and business organisations. There are foreign system kindergartens and foreign system / international schools that offer kindergarten programmes for children of expatriate parents. Child care centres also offer kindergarten programmes to children aged 3 to 6.

A day in the Kindergarten!

Diary of a kindergarten student (Michelle)
Michelle: Yippee! It’s the start of the week again! I love going for lessons at my kindergarten school where all my friends are! :D As usual, my mum would drop me off at the kindergarten before she goes off for work. (I’ll miss you mummy!)
Dancing!~
| We started our day with a short morning exercise and we danced the Hokey-Pokey dance today! It’s one of my favourites! | “…You put your left hand in, you put your left hand out, you put your left hand in and you shake it all about. You do the Hokey-Pokey, and you turn yourself around. That's what it's all about!" ~ |
Lessons! ~
| Art lesson: We had cutting and pasting work to do. Although our hands end up being really dirty, it gave us a great sense of achievement upon completion. | Next we played a sentence structuring game which involves matching phrases to its picture. We usually play such games to expand our vocabulary as part of our learning process. Interesting yeah? |
Reading & Writing! ~
| Yay! I love reading books so my favourite part of the day is the “Quiet Reading Session”, when we can grab any book from the shelf and find a corner to settle down to read. | While some of us read, others use the time to complete their homework at the “Study Corner”. Hmm… it seems like they are not enjoying it very much. :P |
