What is an orchestra?
Those scores the composer strives to create, how do they get to our conscience? The sonorous construction takes life in the the composer’s mind, then is transcribed on a paper, only after all this we are allowed to discover the beauty of the creation, during the concerts given by soloists or orchestras. There’s nothing more enchanting than hearing musical compositions interpreted by 100 musicians in a concert hall.We can certainly say that, the orchestra is the one which transmits to the audience the magic of sounds.Let’s now make, a short bracket about the origin of the term.
The Greeks, with their civilization and charming culture, used the term "orkestra" to name the front part of the scene, in the form of a horseshoe, the place where dancers and musicians performed.Of course, over time, the term has changed its meaning, the orchestra, being a large group of musicians, who interpretate musical compositions, using stringed instruments, wind instruments made of wood and copper and percussion instruments.
We had the opportunity to observe the setting of the instruments on the scene as well as the hard work of the instrumentalists, right on the heart of this big family, at the symphonic orchestra rehearsals Philharmonic State of Transylvania.Perfection can be reached only by long and hard practice.Rehearsals are an important part of the orchestra’s life.Without public, dressed in plain clothes, the orchestra’s members can focus better on the tehnical interpretation. It is a unique atmosphere, where the conductor handles with accomplishment and deaftness the art of teaching. The orchestra rehearsals are like our school days, where the teacher is taking trouble to make us understand the lessons, just as the conductor is teaching and corecting the instrumentalist. The scene offers its space for the 70-100 members, which become one wave while interpreting musical compositions, a “whole” reaching to accompany world renown soloists.

Musical instruments
Let us now talk about the musical instruments and their organization in the orchestra.Certainly, they hadn’t the same structure in the early music. It’s somehow itself understood, that in the beginning, composers used musical instruments by their own taste. The ancestors of the modern orchestra appeared in Italy in the XVII century. After 1750, the orchestras have uniformed, using only certain musical instruments.Hereby, composers have exploited instruments tonalities to produce emotional effects, with the deep tone of the bassoon,or slim and graceful tone of the flute.
Great composers as Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven have improved the harmony of all instruments agreements around 1800.In this period ,the types of musical instruments have not changed, but it has increased the number of the orchestra members and consequently the number of the instruments used. How ample should be an orchestra to manage to fill up with its music colossal concert halls? About this magnitude will speak in the following. The four families of instruments can be seen on the stage, arranged in the shape of a semicircle: stringed instruments, wind instruments made of wood, wind instruments made of copper and percussion instruments.
We have discovered their secrets, observing them closely, seeking information and listening careful to the magical songs each one creates. We took full advantage of the fact that one of our uncles is part of such an orchestra.Throughout the years, we have attended his concerts and rehearsals, and Mr. Manciu managed to form us a clear image about what an orchestra implies, how instruments produce sound, and the interpreter’s emotions and satisfaction after a performance. It is diffrent to read a book about things you can find information viva voce from the one who lives them. They transmitted more feelings, and you as a listener, keep in mind more easily the information. In the following we will write about all we have learned from him.

The orchestra is a big family
Ending the presentation of musical instruments, we asked Mr. Manciu about the conductor of an orchestra.Who is he? What role has he in the orchestra? We found out that due to the expansion of orchestras, the interpretation of symphonic compositions became a difficult problem, and here is where the conductor appears. He is the most important member of the orchestra and directs all the instrumentalists. He stays in front of the orchestra with a baton in his hand, indicating the song’s tempo. With his hands moves and face expression indicates intensity of the sound in the orchestra.
In conclusion , we can say the orchestra is a big family:the musical instruments which harmoniously combine their vibrations, the instrumentalists who are always ready to show the beauty of music and the “father” conductor who watches over all, coordinating every movement. The orchestra with its rich tradition, continues to bloom and we continue to observe it growing, scenting her fragrance and picking up its fruits.
