Traditional Music
What do you think about your traditional music? Do you enjoy it?
Or maybe , do you have a favorite traditional song ?
Through this survey we wanted to know if traditional music is prefered among teenagers. Most of them don't know exacly if they like it or not. Some of them like all kinds of music and very few are conscious of the fact that we should preserve our national traditional music by listening to it and transmit it forward to our descendants. "we should keep our customs and traditions, and we should enjoy traditional music. We can learn from it by our parents, grandparents, etc..." We completly agree with it. Keep thinking like that!

Folklore-a bridge between cultures
Folklore - the People’s artistic creation and the mirror of their life from its origins to present, is a foundation of Romanian culture. Its origins are lost in the remote past, being the work of talented people in the nation. We all think about the importance it represents for our generation, knowing the long process of our evolution.Romanian folk music is inspired by history, ethnographic data, nature and it often represents life documents. Each of us should pay attention to both songs which mirror peoples life today, and creations that belong to the traditional fund.
Cluj has a representative role in the history of Romanian folklore, with an impressive collection of musical creations. Many experts say that Romanian folklore is probably the most varied of all Europe.
Our traditional music is called "populara", meaning that which belongs to ordinary people and has been created by them. It is sung and played with pride by Romanians who take abroad the name of our country. We have specific dances to each region of Romania, songs from each area and performers wearing specific costumes, exquisitely adorned, according to the area they come from.
The most representative types of folk songs from the Romanian repertoire are doina and balada.
Doina is individualized,it is a kind of blues with a social or romantic theme.Doina express strong feelings of longing, of love or of deep sorrow. The link between human and nature, suggests that the harmony of doina’s song is a form of expression of the various states and feelings.
The Ballad, on the other hand, is a collective narrative song, which reflects the human condition and human emotions, often with a historical content.

Dicovering the beauty of folklore
Folk music is the secret ingredient to any successful party in Romania. The specific rhythm and harmony of the music invites you to dance and feel the freedom!
Last summer, in a mountain camp, we joined a festival of the mountaineers during the religious feast "Sfanta Maria”(Mother Mary). Mountaineers are unique in their way to celebrate feasts, organizing festivals with authentic songs and dances. As Brazilians have the rythm of samba in their blood, similary the Romanians are born singers.
We were on a plateau at 1800 meters, the youngsters of Parang appeared in a spectacular way, riding on horsebacks. They all wore feast clothes and the bells were jingling in the picturesque backdrop of mountains. The interpreters, amateurs or professionals, attracted us to join the Romanian round dance, uniting us in a circle of solidarity and sending us a feeling of joy. With small and fast steps, dancing in circles on our traditional music we didn’t figure that time was passing so quickly!Music was like a spell for us...
We have very well known Romanian singers , who have taken abroad the beauty of the folklore: Irina Loghin, the late Ion Dolanescu, Veta Biris, Maria Ciobanu, Aurel Tamas and many others, represent the voice of a whole nation: the Romanians! In this way, we can strongly say that folk music is our ambassador in other countries. It is the way we can communicate between us, no matter where we are from, music is a bridge between cultures.

Hora- the Romanian round dance
We should also mention that in past times , it was no Sunday without the Romanian round dance and instruments agreements not to resound in the Romanian villages. We’ll now describe how was such a day held such in Romanian villages.
The Sunday round dance was the moment in which all youngsters and girls showed their appetite for life, with every step they took, with every shout and every fleeting smile that appeared on their faces. The whole ground was quaking because of the player’s tramping.Tens of pairs were beating traditional dances like "Ardeleana”, „Fecioresti”, „Invartita" filled with zeal. The girls laps were spining in the rythm of the music, raising dust and youngsters were noisily clinking their heels and striking their knees. As the music was intensyfing itself becoming wilder the girls were spining faster and faster under the boys' arms.Cries of joy , voices crushed in songs, dusty boots, fatigue and satisfaction could be read on everyone’s faces. The old ones didn’t dare to play, but stayed silent aside. The young ones became dizzy of so much spining, to the shame of girls they were playing with.

Symbols
As far as folklore is concerned, the artistic movement is impossible to achieve without a musical instrument. Some songs are accompanied by violin, taragot, trumpet, bagpipe, panpipe or other instruments whose sounds, combined with a good voice create a symbol of the country, a representative emblem.
The folklore is heard at the most representative events in human’s life: weddings, christenings, funerals or festivals. The wedding, a sacred and representative moment, is transformed through folklore in a time of play, full of joy.The moments of austerity are melt in a general cheerfulness: oratories, shouts, instrumental songs and dances resonate at the ceremony.Young, elderly, adults, everyone is caught hand by hand and from the Romanian round dance accompanied by sounds and agreements related to the craftsmanship of instrumentalist.
All this talk about the character of Romanians, about the beauty of our country or about the glorious past of the Romanian people.
