East London's first Post Office was a Tree!
|
| This is the Fig tree which is over 200 years old! It is on the West Bank of East London |
East London's first PO
Post Office + Tree:
The post office in East London is actually a monument. In 1982 the Post Office was a Magistrate Office. It also became a local library. Before the Post Office was established, people used the tree that was across the road. People had to find ways to post their messages, so they used the tree. This tree is a fig tree, and it is a big one too. The fig tree is over 200 years old! The branches were so big that they put their messages in bundles and put them in the branches. Later on they built the Post Office, and today you can still see the Post Office and tree. Today you can also see the plaque on the Post Office, but the one on the tree was stolen a few years ago.
The double decker bridge
This is a video I took of the only double decker bridge made of metal (for cars and trains) in SA. I took it at Latimers Landing at the harbour.
