Location

Capidava is built on the right shore of the Danube ( or Donaris how the ancient romans were calling it ) on the half way of the road between Cernavoda and Harsova which leads right near the Fortresses walls.

Some information about the ancient fortress

This fortress was build by emperor Trajan , so that he could watch the see in case any threat came.Along the Black Sea coast line he built more fortresses like :Cius, Troesmis, Noviodunum, Carsium etc.The Fortress has very heavy walls 2 m theak and high 5-7m.Capidava name is a geto-dacian name...and it means " Corner Settlement ".Unfortunately the fortress was destroyed by a migratory population called Pecenegi in the year 1036 and the settlement was completey abandoned definetly.Capidava is one of those places where passer-by literally tread on history.
The vestiges gathered here for almost two thousand years-from Halastatt up to the 11th century AD, the researches have been going on for two generations and currently the third one is taking over.

Scientific Informations

The name that finishes with 'dava' means certainly an old dacian settlement which now doesn't exist anymore.The ancient settlement was built on a spur of limestone hills on the right side of the delta where the river makes a big turning close to Ostrov.The place was particularly appropriated to the construction ferind a vast area of surveillance: a massive rock that stretched between the foot slopes that descend from the N-E and Danube.
The massive present'an advantage as a strategic point of view:a ditch which starts from Danube.Moreover the massive required shape and orientation castrated.
Toponymical getic "Capidava" meaning "fortress of the watershed," confirms a preroman housing explaining the special geographical position.
Research has revealed the graves of soldiers here with swords, with the rich inventory of offerings (fruit, vases, pottery and bronze) and the graves of civilians such as that of
women with splendid jewels and gold cameo). Fortress succession itself presents several levels, the oldest being a camp
