Hystory of Cocos Monastery
Once, long ago, on this hill sung by a savage rooster was heard one night acompanied by a beat a song that was of a semantron (toaca in Romainian). Monks say that this song is heard even today, sometimes. Historical monument and a very important settlement in the monastic Archdiocese of Tomis, Cocos Monastery is situated in Tulcea County, at a distance of 6 km from the village Niculitel, secluded and integrated in the picturesque ancient mountains of Dobrogea . Wrapped in pure flavours of fresh lime forests where Holy Trinity protection is felt it becomes a permanent perfect place of pilgrimage.It is a corner of heaven where at night we can sometimes hear a wild rooster crow and thus the name of the monastery comes from wild rooster (cocos).
