Niculitel Basilic

General informations

Niculitel basilic (at 15 km from Isacea)is the oldest building of this type known until this day in our country.It is a unique arhitecture in Europe.The bacilic and the crypt was built in the time of Emperor Valens (after 370).

At Niculitel there is an architectural ensemble built within an older dwelling area.It consists of a paleo-Christian basilica placed above some martyr tombs.

Niculitel

The discovery of Niculitel has historic and religious importance. It is the oldest building of this type built so far. During research arhelogists found blocks of plaster at the entry.Below was found a coin with a cross barely perceivable, which would allow construction bazilicii rank and crypts, dating from the Emperor Teodosie II (408-450). In the upper part of the wall on the right and left of the entrance were two incision in plaster made in Greek.

The Projection

Archway walls were painted with two colors, one red of 5 cm thik and one white, of 6 cm thick. Points of the two inscriptions were also painted with red. They measure 4.5-6 cm height and 7-8 cm wide. Each inscription has begun a cross. Inscription on the left: † martyrs of Christ; inscription on the right: Zoticos martyrs, Attalos, Kamasis, Filippos.

Another information

Other objects discovered in the crypt were found in the basement room. Those objects are two vessels: a black-gray bowl, characteristic of V-IV century, with traces of mortar, the filing of its evidence when constructing crypts and a globular vessel, brick-red, round-bottomed specific for the late Roman pottery, from the V-VI centuries.

The Cross

Cross monogram found on crypt Niculitel basilica is encountered on a number of Christian monuments of the Roman-Byzantine period.It's writing is specific for the IV-V centuries.
