What Is Folk Music?

Folk music is sometimes called traditional music. Folk music exists in all cultures. It often tells about a way of life or important events in history of that culture. Folk music plays an important role in history. Today many people around the world know how to read and write. But this wasn’t always the case. Until 20th century many people in the world were illiterate. This was true for centuries. This means that stories and events that happened to hem could not be written so that we learn about them. So, people wrote songs. There was no CDs and mp3 players. So,music was shared in social events. People sang them on farms and gatherings. Folk songs were passed from generation to generation and through them stories from long ago survived even if they were not written down.

Purpose of Folk Music

All music is written for a reason. Folk music was and may still be written to express feelings of what was or is happening in and around the community in that point of time. Folk or traditional music exist in all cultures around the world. Folk music is different for different cultures because it reflects beliefs and customs of that culture. Often folk songs are written for holidays or special events or festivals. They tell about an event such as wedding, funeral or good harvest. Most folk songs, in every culture, have very meaningful lyrics that talk about struggles, battles, or hystoric events.Folk or traditional music exist in all cultures around the world. HAUL A WOOD PILE DOWN

One of the reasons folks songs were written was to tell about everyday life. Many everyday folks were not literate and these songs were a way to tell and preserve history. This son is an example of a folk song written about daily life. The singer is unknown but the son was recorded in 1920s in California. • Hello There, Courtney L!

Thanks for inviting me to your awesome ThinkQuest page!

My favorite folk song is "The Green Grass Grew All Around". I like this one the best because it is one of the songs I sing with my granddaughter, Paige, who is four years old.

I'm a teacher in Brevard County, just learning how to use ThinkQuest. It's wonderful that your school and teacher are using this tool.

    Keep up the good work!
