Mythbusting: Myths about mouth and the truth behind it

Myth: Tooth removal can cause blindness (Wow!)
Fact: Nervous system that ran through upper row of tooth have different lane from the one that ran through our eyes. Even though inflammation can spread to eyes, it’s highly unlikely that tooth removal can cause blindness at all.

Myth: Felling any pain? Just use analgesic drugs!
Fact: Pain killer only had temporary relief and will eventually goes away. Any tooth cavity should be treated right away.

Myth: Tooth cavity should just be left as it is. As the tooth decay, the pain would eventually goes away.
Fact: Any cavities left untreated will eventually dissolve the tooth. When the tooth eventually dissolve, the gum will be more susceptible for infection that can spread trough blood vessel. So it´s better to pull your tooth before it´s too late.

Myth: Thumb sucking can lead to deformed teeth/bucktooth.
Fact: Prolonged thumb sucking can lead to teeth deformation. Continuous Thumb sucking longer than 36 to 48 month can eventually lead to deformation.

Myth: tooth cavity should be pulled out rather than being patched, because patching can still produce pain
Fact: tooth removal out is the last option when there is no other treatments can be applied. By loosing one tooth, it can decrease the effectiveness of chewing. Nowadays, the medical technology has improved well, so a good quality of tooth patch can be achieved.

Myth: Bad breath occur because of problems in digestive system
Fact: almost 85% researches show that the cause of bad breath is living bacteria in mouth. This bacteria grows under the condition of lacking oxygen, they produce gas called ‘volatile sulfur compound’ that makes our mouth smells bad.

Myth: mouth rinse can cure bad breath
Fact: based on the research by examining the effectiveness of mouth rinse that contain essential oil, the amount of bacteria will decrease significantly in 12 hours but only in short time. On the other hand, alcohol based mouth rinse worsen bad breath condition.

Myth: tooth removal can’t be done under the condition of woman’s menstruation
Fact: hormonal alteration can occur during woman’s menstruation. That change can increase the amount of estrogen and progesterone hormone. By having it, the condition of woman’s gums can be more susceptible to inflammation. Tooth removal can still be done, but to avoid inflammation, tooth removal should be done in the end of menstruation cycle.

Myth: mouth ulcer occur because of vitamin C deficiency
Fact: although the cause of mouth ulcer is not identified enough until now. But there are some reasons that predictable enough to begin with. They are immunity deficiency, lacking of nutrition, stress, etc.
