The northern tropical rainforests of Australia get heavy monsoon rains during the Summer time.Australia tends to get very hot during the day but considerably cold at night. About two-thirds of Australia is temperate and one third is tropical. The coldest areas of Australia are Tasmania and the Southeastern corner of the mainland.  The seasons of Australia are Spring: September to November, Summer: December to February, Fall: March to May, Winter: June to August. Australia has frequent droughts that often last several. The natural hazards of Australia include: tornadoes, thunderstorms, occasional floods, and frequent bushfires. Australia also has different regions that have different climates.

There are three time zones in Australia. The absolute location of Australia is 27 degrees south and 144 degrees east. The total coastline of Australia is 25,760 kilometers (16,007 miles). Australia’s highest point is Mt. Kosciusko at 7,310 feet high (2,228 meters). The longest river in Australia is the Darling River. Australia’s western side is made up of the Western Plateau. Australia’s largest lake is Lake Eyre which is also Australia’s lowest point at 49 feet below sea level (15 meters). Located on the eastern side of Australia the Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest natural structure.

Australia’s land consists of four distinct land divisions (by invisible line not actually divided) ; The Eastern Highlands, The South Australian Highlands, The Central Low lands, and The Western Plateau. Forty percent of Australia is covered by sand dunes. The rainfall in Australia is variable. Australia has occasional dust storms.
