History of Math and its Impact on our Society
It may not be important to us in our everyday lives but math has an important impact on our society.
Since the early history of man, math has been important to civilization. The "first " math was discovered on the bones of animals. Anciet Egypt and the Babylonians used the first calender around 4,000 BC, which used numbers for counting. In Ancient Egypt they used a decimal number system and the first symbols for numbers using straight lines.
Around 3000 BC, the abacus was developed for counting in the Middle East and used in areas around the Mediterranean.
Hieroglyphic numerals were used in Egypt as well as geometry by the year 1900 BC.
Have you ever wondered who thought of multiplication? That was the Babylonians who also knew "higher" math such as the Pythagorean theory, linear equations, and quadratic equations.
The Babylonians and the Egyptians were very good at math and it was a big part of success of their societies. Their knowladge of math helped them build the Tower of Babel and the Pyramids. They even used math to study Astronomy, which eventually led to further discoveries about how our universe is made. All of the questions that you have abut science will probably have a math connection somewhere.
Eventually math made its way to Greece when the Babylonians and the Egyptians societies were not so dominant. Math isn't just for counting and it is not new. When you look at the sky or a tall building or even nature itself, remember that math is hiding in them somewhere and our society would not be the same without it.
