Prologue
Mankind is separated by an expanse of oceans and miles of land and yet linked by a single word: Hunger. It is a word we know well but at the same time, it is also a word we don't know at all. For many around the world though, this is the only word they know. In the past few years, a global food crisis has been terrorizing our world, looming over it like a gray cloud, threatening to cast us into a maelstrom of despair. All of us are affected, albeit to varying degrees. Those of us who are lucky enough may just see a rise in the monthly food bills. The less fortunate ones however, are suffering daily from starvation and malnourishment. They live life without the guarantee of three meals a day, without ever knowing the feeling of being full. In these nations, not a single grain of rice would be left wasted even if it were on the ground.
Hunger is slowly eating away humanity. It is gnawing at us like a worm in an apple, starting from the core with the poorest people on Earth, and slowly progressing to the surface of the less vulnerable. We must stop it before it is too late. With this noble purpose in mind, we have comprised a ThinkQuest group of four students from Shanghai High School International Division, namely, Qiao Yu, Albert, Shu Wen, and Lea, and two students from Raffles Institution in Singapore, Ian and Hubert, to create a globally conscious website that tells the tale of Hunger. With members from the United States, Canada, Japan, and Singapore, the website is created from an international perspective and aims to explore the worldwide calamity through research, arguments, surveys, and interviews. Through this website, we hope to link all of humanity together, to bring mankind into one, to join the entire human race in the common quest of defeating our greatest foe yet: Hunger.
