Brick- when the ball bounces off the backboard or rim

Backcourt- one half of the court where the offenses (team with the ball) basket is NOT. A team’s backcourt is another team’s frontcourt.

Dunk- when the player with the ball leaves the ground and forces the ball into the net.

Air ball- when the ball gets shot (to the hoop) and completely misses the backboard and or rim

Dribble (dribbling) - when a play bounces the

ball with one or both hands, used to keep control of the ball.

Elbowing- is a violation if a player swings his/her elbows, if contact is made or not made it will be called as a foul.

Foul- actions by a player in which they break the rules, not floor violations; some may result in possession of the ball or free throws.

Floor Violation- one of the players actions that violates the rules but does not make an opponents movement or cause any harm, will result in loss of possession of the ball.

Double-Dribbling- When a player with possession of the ball dribbles, stops dribbling, then starts again.

Traveling- When the player with the possession of the ball stops dribbling and takes steps.

Over-Time(OT): If the game ends in a tie the game goes into a 3 minute "mini-game" to decide who wins.

Tip-off: At the beginning of the game the referee throws the ball up and the two players try to get the ball to their teammates.

Referee: The person(s) who keep the game in a flow and under control(they call the fouls and who has possession of the ball.)

Backboard: The flat board directly behind the basketball net/hoop; the hoop is connected to the backboard.

Drive: When the player with the ball aggresivly goes to the basket to make a shot.

Lay-up: When the player with the ball goes to the basket, jumps, and shoots off the backboard into the hoop with one hand.

Fast-break: A act of running faster then the defensive team to your basket(on the other side of the court) to make a basket.

Stuff: When the offensive player goes to shoot and the defensive player hits the ball out of their hands; unable for them to shoot.

Fouled-out: When a play commits five fouls and cannot play in the game.

Foul Shot(Free Throw): A shot when no one is able to block you; they count as one(1) point each.

Pivot: When the player with the ball keeps one foot on the ground but can move their other foot.

Full-Court Press: When the defensive team tries to steal the ball from the offensive team when they are passing the ball in.

Steal: When the defensive team takes the ball from the offensive team.

Jump-shot: When a offensive player shoots the ball; both their feet leave the ground.

Pass: When a player passes the ball to their teammate; one of the opposing teammates can intersept this pass.

Rebound: When a player shoots the ball and misses; one of their teammates or one of the opposite teammates can retrieve the ball.

Time-out: A 60 second period where the teams go to their benches to have their coach talk to them. Usually called if the coach doesn't like what the players are doing.
