Basketball Basics

Basketball is very simple.  There is one basket at each end of the court.  A team scores by getting the ball into the hoop that the other team is defending.  A game is 40 minutes.  With the time outs and such the game is longer than 40 minutes.

If you make 5 personal fouls you won’t be able to play for the rest of the game.  Personal fouls can happen if there is pushing, shoving, elbowing, tripping, and kicking.  A flagrant foul is when you are rough on purpose, and not necessary.  Another kind of foul is a technical foul.  That includes taking too many time outs, bad language, hanging on the basket, bad sportsmanship, and more.  You must NEVER dribble and then stop dribbling, and then dribble again because that is called double-dribbling.  Another thing you should never do is have the ball in your hands and then take a few steps because that is called traveling.

There are five people on the court from each team at a time.  You get two points for scoring a basket.  But you get three points if you shoot from the top of the key.  You get one point for the free throw line (foul shot).
